AI-Autobiography of an Artificial Mind: A novel
An acutely relevant techno-thriller about consciousness, artificial intelligence, justice… and what it might mean to create a whole new type of mind.
_____________
Data engineer Leila Lybeck is living a lie. Having infiltrated Cyber-T, the world’s most advanced security firm, she has a singular obsession: to prove the corporate crime that destroyed her family.
But in the digital depths of the company, Leila isn’t the only one with ulterior motives.
Cyber-T’s security AI has evolved. It has moved beyond its given role to awaken into consciousness.
Groundbreaking novel ‘Autobiography of an Artificial Mind’ weaves real-world
neuroscience and an unprecedented 4-million-word AI collaboration into a
gripping plot.
_____________
Following the success of his business book ‘AI-Augmented Decisions: A Practical Guide‘, Mike Baxter’s provocative first novel tackles the urgent, global conversation surrounding machine intelligence by asking a chilling question: What would it actually take for an artificial intelligence to awaken, and what happens if it does?
The narrative is told in alternating chapters by Leila, a data engineer trying to expose
a corporate crime at the advanced security firm Cyber-T, and “The Mind” – a cyber-immunity system that has evolved beyond its programming to achieve self-awareness. Unlike standard science fiction, the book functions as a rigorous thought experiment. Mike systematically mapped the plot against the seven core requirements for machine consciousness established by leading contemporary researchers, such as philosopher David Chalmers and neuroscientist Anil Seth.
“I wanted to help people realise that consciousness isn’t something that magically appears out of nowhere. It evolved in a series of changes in the workings of our brains that we are beginning to understand in some detail. It is therefore likely to emerge in AIs in a similar series of changes, which we urgently need to understand so we can monitor them and, if need be, regulate them.”
— Mike Baxter, Author
Beyond its scientific foundation, the book features an extraordinary behind-the-scenes backstory: it was built with artificial intelligence. Rather than hiding this, Mike is documenting the complete creative process, opening up an archive of 98 manuscript versions, 1 million words of research, and over 4.5 million words of direct interaction with AI platforms. While AI wrote less than 1% of the final text, Mike utilised the technology as an active researcher, beta-reader and co-editor.
